Leaderboard Point System

All horses must be registered with the USEA at Limited or Full status and riders must be current USEA members at a competition-eligible level (Life, Full, Junior, or Intercollegiate) on or before an event's starting date for the horse and rider to receive award points.

USEA award points are based on point values detailed in the charts below and only apply for the current competition year (December 1 – November 30).

  • Chart One contains the point values used for the individual award categories at the Beginner Novice, Novice, Training, and Modified levels.
  • Chart Two contains the point values used for the overall leaderboard at the Beginner Novice, Novice, Training, Modified, and CCI* levels.
  • Charts Three, Four, and Five contain the point values for the individual award categories and overall leaderboard at the Preliminary/CCI2*, Intermediate/CCI3*, and Advanced/CCI4* & CCI5* levels.

Award point values are applied to the top 25 percent of starters in a division that have achieved the Minimum Eligibility Requirement (MER) at competitions in the U.S. and competitions outside of the U.S recognized by the FEI. Percentile of .5 and higher will be rounded to the next placing.

The top six scores with the highest USEA award point values earned by horse or rider during the current competition year will determine the final leaderboard standings.

In the event of a tie, tie breaks will be determined by taking the average of the top six final scores (not point values). If there is still equality, the tie remains.

MER for National Levels Beginner Novice, Novice, Training, Modified, Preliminary, Intermediate, Advanced

  • Dressage – no more than 45 penalty points
  • Cross-Country – no jumping penalties and no more than 30-time penalties
  • Show Jumping – no more than 16 jumping penalties

MER for FEI Levels CCI*, CCI2*, CCI3*, CCI4*, CCI5*

  • Dressage – no more than 45 penalty points
  • Cross-Country – no jumping penalties and no more than 30-time penalties for 1/2/3/4-star levels and no more than 40 time penalties for 5-star level
  • Show Jumping – no more than 16 jumping penalties.

USEA award points accumulate during the competition lifetime of each horse, but only the points earned in the current year count toward the year-end awards.

At horse trials offering a dressage test and show jumping test at the higher level, points will be awarded based on the level of cross-country.

Cross-country completions without jump penalties are awarded points at the national three-day event, including P3D, T3D, M3D, N3D, and BN3D and CCI-L levels, regardless of placing within 25 percent of the division.
