Eventing Advent Calendar: Day 16

By Emily Daily | Dec 17, 2010

Can you believe we only have a little more than a week before Christmas? Yikes. What happened to 2010? Although, with the sudden unexpected dumping of several inches of snow in our area today, the shimmering landscape is a bit more holiday-esque…rather than the permafrost, rock-hard “blah” we’ve had for weeks.

Here are a few ideas to help you slide seamlessly into winter…

Clothing (Human):

1.) Full-body wind/rain/ice protection – Carhartts are a favorite for many horsey folks, and although they can be a bit pricey, the quality and durable is impressive. How convenient is it to slide out of bed in your pajamas and just zip right into your full outfit for morning feeding? I myself bought a pair of ski bib overalls at my local Walmart…snagged them in the kid’s department for $15. Sure, they probably won’t last more than a few months, but hey…$15. Can’t beat it.

2.) Boots – So many options… the L.L.Beans (for the plaid-fanatic, classic outdoorsy type), the Dubarrys (for fashionistas…or Europeans…or anyone lucky enough to have been gifted one of these gems…*hint hint*), or…cheapo fuzz-lined rubber boots (for the penny-pincher). I got a pair at Target late this fall, and I know they won’t won’t last, but they were cheap, warm, and waterproof…my trifecta of awesome boot requirements.

3.) Cranial Accessories…aka Hat/Facemask/Scarf – I really like the look of this neck/face warmer…cozy and versatile! Also, these aren’t exactly practical for barn work or winter riding…but they’re darn funny. But when the bone-chilling wind comes screaming through the mountains…THIS is what I want! Helmet-attachable ear muffs and handbands are also essentials.

4.) Undergarments/Snugglies – These long-john bottoms are amazing – super comfy, and slim enough to wear under your bulky layers. And they double as great workout pants, too. You can find silky long underwear just about anywhere…stock up! Under Armour (or any other moisture-wicking spin-off) are great, too.

5.) Sockies – Hiking socks or any kind of wool-blend types are handy to have – REI (who have a guide to picking out hiking socks..seriously…), Back Country, and other outdoor retailers usually have a wide selection. And these don’t look like the warmest socks, but how neat would these eventing socks be as stocking stuffers?

That’s all for today – tomorrow we’ll talk about winter essentials for your ponies!
