The 18th annual Jersey Fresh International (JFI) gets underway this afternoon at the Horse Park of New Jersey in Allentown, N.J. The CCI4*-L is the final selection trial for the Olympic Games in Tokyo later this summer so all eyes will be on the stacked field.
The Field:
The 2020 edition of Jersey Fresh was canceled due to COVID-19 so the last running was in 2019 when Fylicia Barr came out on top with Galloway Sunrise. The pair made their Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event debut last month so will not be back to defend their title.
Buck Davidson has more Jersey wins than any other rider. In 2005 Davidson won the first Jersey Fresh CCI3* (now CCI4*-L) with Hyperlite, he won it again in 2014 aboard Copper Beach, and in 2015 with Ballynoe Castle RM, and will return this year in the class with Sorocaima to try to make four wins. Phillip Dutton has two Jersey wins on his record (2012 with Mystery Whisper and 2017 with Mr. Candyman) and is entered this year with Sea of Clouds. Boyd Martin won in 2018 with Long Island T and will try to tie Dutton’s win record this year with Luke 140.
Mr. Candyman, who won in 2017 with Dutton, is entered this year with his new owner, Alexandra Baugh.
With 55 entries this is the biggest field since the level debuted at Jersey Fresh in 2005. In 2019 there were only 18 pairs in the CCI4*-L.
Nineteen horses are making their CCI4*-L debut: Business Class, Claus 63, Diamond Duette, Electric Lux, FE Coldplay, FE Golden Eye, FE Mississippi, Flower Girl, Global Ex, Let It Be Lee, Monbeg Myth, Ms. Poppins, Oskar, Prophet, Riviera Lu, Sorocaima, Trendy Fernhill, Truckee Bash, and Vermont.
Nicole Aden, Meaghan Marinovich Burdick, Erin Renfroe, Dana Cooke, Alexandra Baugh, and Natalia Neneman are all attempting their first CCI4*-L.
Alexandra Knowles and Tamra Smith tie as the busiest riders in the CCI4*-L with three entries apiece.
The Facts:
Andrew Temkin is the technical delegate for both four-star divisions and Gale D’Amanda-Fox is the technical delegate for both three-star divisions. They will be assisted by Rick Caldwell.
The judges for Jersey Fresh are the same as the Kentucky Three-Day Event judges. For the CCI4*-L and CCI3*-L, Robert Stevenson is the president with members Christina Klingspor and Peter Gray. For the CCI4*-S and CCI3*-S, Mark Weissbecker is president with Helen Brettell as member.
Morgan Rowsell is the cross-country course designer and is being advised by Capt. Mark Phillips.
Chris Barnard will design the show jumping course.
The 2021 prize money breakdown is: CCI4*-L: $15,000, CCI3*-L $10,000; CCI4*-S $4,000; and CCI3*-S $2,000.
The event will be permitted to welcome spectators. For further information on changes to the USEF COVID-19 protocols, please click here.
