Over 200 entries have flocked to the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina for the annual Tryon International Three-Day event which will run CCI*-L, CCI2*-L, CCI3*-L, CCI4*-S, and CCI4*-L divisions over the course of four days November 10-14.
The Field:
The Tryon International Three-Day event is the 2021 USEF CCI4*-L Eventing National Championship.
Riders from the U.S., Sweden, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Great Britain, and Brazil all hope to hear their country’s national anthem played at the end of the weekend in the CCI4*-L.
The 9-year-old Hyperion Stud owned Holsteiner gelding Chin Tonic (Chin Champ x Wildera) and Will Coleman are fresh off of a victory in the CCI4*-S at Morven Park in October and have had a top-five placing at every event they’ve competed at dating back to April of this year.
The second-place finisher from the CCI4*-S at Morven Park, Laurie Cameron’s 9-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding Miks Master C (Mighty Magic x Qui Luma CBF), is also on the roster to compete in the CCI4*-L this weekend with Maya Black in the tack. In addition to their recent second-place finish, the pair snagged a win in the CCI4*-S at the Event at Rebecca Farm in July and a first in the CCI3*-S at the Maryland Horse Trials earlier that same month.
Canadian rider Brandon McMechan and his 12-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Oscar’s Wild are also ones to keep your eye on, having placed first in the last four out of five events they have contested, including a win at Bromont in the CCI4*-S.
Of the 26-horse field, seven horses will be hoping to cross their first CCI4*-L off their bucket list this weekend. The roster of CCI4*-L rookie horses includes; Bacyrouge a 10-year-old Selle Francais gelding owned by Patricia Pearce and ridden by Lindsay Traisnel, Capitol HIM (Con Air x o-heraldika) a 14-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Christa Schmidt and ridden by Hannah Sue Burnett, Chin Tonic ridden by Will Coleman, Dasset Olympus (Lancelot x Cushlamochree an 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding owned and ridden by Lillian Heard, Eclair (Furejev x Evita) a 10-year-old German Sport Horse mare owned by Mark and Katherine Bellissimo and Jimmie Schramm and ridden by Schramm, Lumumba (Levisonn x Lamara) a 10-year-old Mecklenburg mare owned by The Donavan Group and ridden by Bobby Meyerhoff, and SBT Barolo (Loughehoe Guy x Tentore Flight) an 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by Robin Walker and Alston Kerr and ridden by Walker.
One horse and rider pair will be contesting their first CCI4*-L together— Jamie Kellock and Jane Stephenson’s 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Summer Bay.
Heard’s ride Dasset Olympus is the youngest horse in the field at just 8 years old, while two horses share the title of oldest horses of the field with 2007 birthdays: Altorac Farm’s Holsteiner gelding Mr Candyman (Canto x Montara) ridden by Alexandra Baugh and Burnett’s ride, Capitol HIM.
