In Memoriam: Jean Horst Gore

By Chris Donovan | Jan 10, 2023

Jean Horst Gore, age 87, passed on January 8th, 2023. Gore was a lifetime equestrian born into a family that was not "horsey." She competed in the hunter ring, fox hunted with Elkridge Harford, and evented. Gore has been heavily involved with the sport of eventing, competing in her first event in the early 1970s. She competed at the Preliminary level in the ‘80s and ‘90s on the horses Choreographer, High Design, and Run Around Sue. Gore last competed with Faith, Choreographer’s daughter, at the Novice and Beginner Novice levels for 14 years until 2018. In 2012, Gore and High Design joined the USDF Century Club. In 2015, she was awarded a USEA Vintage Cup.

Gore was active with Maryland Combined Training Association (MCTA) from its founding as a volunteer, mentor, and board member, including being president from 1980 - 1981. She was the steady rudder that has enabled MCTA to be known as one of the oldest active events and associations in the country. If Gore was not competing, she could be found volunteering as a fence judge or prize giver at Area II events.

She is survived by her son Kenneth Beach Gore, Jr. his spouse, two grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her fantastic hosting skills, great cooking, and friendship will be greatly missed by all of us whom the family called her "horsey friends."

A memorial service will be held at The Church of the Holy Comforter 130 W. Seminary Ave. Lutherville MD 21093 Thursday, January 12th at 11:00 a.m.
